Gear Hobbing 16" OD x 18" x 12" Face

Turning

Long Tube and Shaft Machining

We have specialized CNC lathes for making tube and shaft like parts. Tubes require specialized equipment for accurate manufacturing since they have open ends that make it impossible to use centers. This is why Nelson Engineering’s incorporates a steady rest when turning precision tubes. The steady rest, a programmable three bearing "claw", clamps around the end of the tube and holds the part concentric while the part is machined. What makes this type of equipment unique is that it requires a large capital investment of a dual turret lathe. For machining long shafts our lathes have programmable centers for quick and accurate manufacturing of long parts. These centers allow consistent pressure to be applied on the part and automatically release with the push of a button as compared to mechanically releasing the part with a wrench.

Large Diameter Turned Parts

Large diameters up to 22" are easily handled on our Femco wheel lathe. This lathe is specially designed for large diameters that require a lot of material removal, up to .5" on just one pass! For even larger material removal rates on large parts our Mori Seiki ZL-35 lathe with two turrets can get the job done in half the time.

High Speed Material Removal (HSM)

But our two newest Mori Seiki lathes set a whole new level of performance. With two spindles and two turrets one half of the turned part can be machined while the other half is also being machined, all at the same time. This machine is literally like two machines in one. With the robotic arm and bar feeder this machine can run unmanned day and night. Another addition to our lineup is our Mori Seiki ZL-35 which also incorporates two turrets so your parts get made in half the time.

Combination Lathe/Mill Parts

Almost all parts that Nelson Engineering makes have lathe and mill work on them. We understand that lathe work done at the beginning of the manufacturing process can have a huge impact on the quality of mill work done towards the end and vice versa. You can be assured that our rigorous planning takes the complexities of combination parts into account.

Vertical and Horizontal Machining

Horizontal Machining Centers and High Volume Manufacturing

Nelson Engineering, Inc. boasts three horizontal machining centers for your complex and high volume production runs. All of our horizontals are state of the art but our Mori Seiki and Toyoda truly set the standard for speed, ruggedness and accuracy. Our Mori Seiki features three pallets for parts that may have quick cycle times and very high volumes. Our Toyoda is our most rugged machine and is especially proficient at taking deep cuts into tough steels, super-alloys and titanium. If you have complex parts that need to be attacked from multiple angles or a high volume production run, our two shifts can go thru your order in record time.

Vertical Machining Centers

Our vertical machining centers are the work horses of our milling department which is why we only by the best equipment. Each of our 5 MoriSeiki’s truly set the standard for reliability, performance, and speed. We can remove material at 800 inches per minute at very high spindle speeds which translates into parts that are made quickly and accurately.

Short Production Runs

Nelson Engineering, Inc. has a very flexible production system which strives to shorten non-machining time to a minimum. This translates into a quick turn around for your short production runs.
